I APPLAUD the state Department of Public Health’s response to the opiate crisis, and welcome the overhaul of the Prescription Monitoring Program.
However, we seem to be of two minds when it comes to narcotics. On the one hand there is alarm about their abuse and addiction potential. On the other, there is a steady drumbeat of concern about inadequate management of pain by health care providers. Because of the former, physicians by law are allowed to prescribe only one month’s supply of Schedule II narcotics. The prescriptions cannot be written with any refills. Faxed or electronically transmitted prescriptions are not acceptable.
