Fighting the opiate crisis in Mass.

A CRISIS in opiate abuse is affecting individuals and families across Massachusetts, with death rates exceeding those from traffic accidents and even the number of Massachusetts men and women who have lost their lives in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Opiate abuse in Massachusetts, exacerbated by the abuse of prescription painkillers, has caused the death of 2,867 residents between 2003 and 2007.
In response, the Massachusetts OxyContin and Heroin Commission has investigated the impact of OxyContin and heroin abuse and the Patrick-Murray administration is committed to raising awareness of abuse, improving treatment and prevention services, and increasing education and training of medical professionals.
