Every single day, drug overdoses kill 114 Americans and send nearly 7,000 others to emergency rooms. That’s one overdose death every 12 minutes. Yet it has been estimated that 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, and opioid painkillers have become the preferred treatment.

Ameritox provides medication monitoring services – largely through urine drug tests – to clinicians who prescribe controlled medications: prescription painkillers (opioids such as hydrocodone, oxycodone and the like), benzodiazepines (anti-anxiety drugs) and stimulants. These tests can help a physician assess whether a patient is taking the prescribed medication or taking other drugs (prescribed or illicit) that the clinician is not aware of.

The results presented here were compiled based on samples submitted by more than 400,000 unique patients for a period of time that ended Sept. 1, 2014.
