OxyContin painkiller still the number one addiction problem here in Sault Ste. Marie

Sault pharmacist Manuel dos Reis, in response to a question about mortality rates related to use of prescription opioid painkillers locally, said, “Guaranteed. I have had patients pass away from overdoses. That is not anything new.”
Dos Reis, whose pharmacy delivers a methadone program to local patients, identified OxyContin, a commonly prescribed opioid painkiller, as the number one addiction problem in the Sault. “Methadone is a substitute for opioids in general, and the addiction problem here in town is not heroin. It is OxyContin….The two things here that are huge because of the pharmaceutical trade are OxyContin and cocaine. Those are the two drugs of choice being abused here in town.”
