South Dakota’s attorney general hopes the availability of federal money will persuade a budget-conscious Legislature to create a prescription drug monitoring program this year.
Most doctors, police and pharmacists say a database listing all the addictive drugs prescribed in South Dakota will help prevent doctor shopping, but others are concerned about long-term funding in the face of deep projected deficits. Doctor shopping is the practice of visiting multiple doctors to get more drugs.
