Rx Guardian Patented Methods

To achieve the full benefit of your care, your patients must take their medications as prescribed. Our Rx GuardianSM proprietary methods of analysis bring a new level of understanding to your patients’ pain medication use. It’s important information for discussing treatment with your patients to improve chronic pain outcomes.

A national study shows that up to 75% of pain patients may not be taking their medications as prescribed for a variety of reasons1. These reasons include everything from simply choosing not to take their medications to taking too much because of inadequate pain control, addiction or diversion. The Ameritox Rx GuardianSM process can help you determine whether your patient is taking his or her medication in a manner that is consistent with the prescribed regimen.

Most urine drug testing simply determines the absence or presence of a certain class of drugs. The Ameritox Rx GuardianSM process identifies and quantifies the specific drug or metabolite for a broad range of controlled medications. Every initial positive result is then confirmed.

Our process exceeds the most demanding standards and may include the following tests:

  • Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA)
  • Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)
  • Gas Chromatography—Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)
  • Liquid Chromatography—Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS)

After screening and confirmatory testing, we analyze and report the amount of drug or metabolite present. We then employ an additional phase of urine drug test analysis for certain medications. Using our patented methods, your patient’s specific factors and urine drug test results are analyzed to produce a normalized patient value. This normalized value is then compared to an expected range for some of the most common prescribed medications. All of this information helps you determine whether your patient is taking his or her medication as prescribed.

With this information, you can have important discussions with your patients about their pain medication use, potentially helping your patients avoid dangerous consequences of pain medication abuse and misuse.  It’s information that’s changing the pain conversation and leading to better patient and practice outcomes.

To date, Ameritox’s lab has processed close to 2 million urine drug samples. More than 80% of all the urine drug samples were analyzed using the Rx Guardian process. We continue to invest in new approaches to pain medication monitoring solutions through ongoing research and clinical trials. The 2007 study “Evaluation of a Proprietary Algorithm to Provide a Clinical Adjunct to Predicting Dose Compliance” looked at the predictive power of the Rx Guardian methodology for hydrocodone.  It’s just further evidence of how Ameritox pain medication monitoring solutions are becoming an integral part of chronic pain care.
